Permits are now available to cut down Christmas trees in the Black Hills National Forest. Permits are $10 per tree plus a processing fee, and up to 5 permits may be purchased per account.
Juniper, spruce, or ponderosa pines up to 20 feet high can be cut in designated areas. Individuals need to bring their own equipment to chop and transport trees.
All fourth-graders in the state receive a free permit as part of the Every Kid Outdoors Program.
Permits can be purchased online, from a Forest Service office, or through a private vendor until Dec. 24. Visit Recreation.gov for more information.
