The Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village will host the annual Archeology Days event this weekend, giving visitors the chance to learn about early Native American cultures.
The village is South Dakota’s only active dig site open to the public, according to organizers.
So far this year, the excavation unearthed an intact bison skull and two rare bone carvings. Last year, three intact skulls were found, which is quite an unusual find.
“We look forward to Archeology Days every year to be able to share the ongoing discoveries of the excavation as well as to create a better sense of the lives and traditions of South Dakota’s original inhabitants” Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village executive director Cindy Gregg said.
Visitors will have the opportunity to see demonstrations of traditional pottery construction and atlatl throwing.
Additionally, archaeologists from the University of Exeter England will be available to discuss techniques, discoveries, and artifacts.
The event will take place on June 10 and 11 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. More information can be found at www.mitchellindianvillage.org.
