Rapid City to host next World Wilderness Congress

Bison are included in WILD12 rewilding efforts

Wild Idea Buffalo in western South Dakota has made improving our ecosystem its mission.

The Monument in Rapid City is set to host the 12th World Wilderness Congress.

Also known as WILD12, the event brings Indigenous leadership, artists, scientist, land managers and government officials together from around the globe.

Organizers said topics of discussion will include rewilding, biodiversity credits, conservation of Antarctica and conservation finance.

Past speakers include the 56th president of Mexico, 22nd prime minster of Norway, the president of South Africa.

The congress is unique in that no membership is required to be named a delegate. The WILD12 organizers said any person who wishes to attend or participate is welcome.

Program officials said they expect over 2,000 delegates to attend. The summit takes place Aug. 25-31 of 2024.
