After multiple storms brought flooding and damage across eastern South Dakota FEMA now has four Disaster Recovery Centers to assist residents.
The four counties with Disaster Recovery Centers are Davison, Lincoln, Turner, and Union.
Tony Mayne is a Media Relations Specialist with FEMA Region 8. He said so far between the four counties FEMA has granted more than 1,000 applications totaling over $6 million dollars.
“FEMA funding is not going to make you whole. You’re not going to get a new house through FEMA funding. That’s why we always say it’s very important that you have the proper insurance that you need for your home. Be it homeowners, flood insurance, whatever else. So, that money is to help people if they can’t live in their house or help get their house back safely, so it is livable again," said Mayne. "There is a cap to how much money you can get but every survivor’s case is separate. It’s not about you or your neighbor like if they get some you’re not going to get some, no. It’s designed to kick start your recovery and make it safe for you again in your home.”
Even with FEMA’s assistance, Mayne said most homeowners and renters will require more help.
Claudia Anderson is a Public Information Officer with the U.S. Small Business Administration.
“We actually offer disaster loans to businesses, non-profits, homeowners and renters. We have different types of loans, so, one of the primary loans is the physical damage disaster loan. So if your place of business or your home or non-profit has been impacted by this disaster, you should come in and seek to apply for a disaster loan,” said Anderson.
Anderson said every DRC will have a representative from the SBA to assist individuals looking for a more personalized loan solution. Anderson said the deadline for individuals to apply for a disaster loan through the SBA is October 15th.
Survivors of recent disasters can contact FEMA assistance via phone, by visiting disaster assistance.gov, downloading the FEMA app, or visiting one of the four DRC’s in the state.
