State officials are reminding South Dakotans to call 811 before starting an excavation or digging project.

Calling 811 helps identify underground wires and utilities before you dig. South Dakota Public Utilities Commission officials say this helps avoid both potential safety hazards and the risk of disrupting utilities in your area.

“It is appropriate that April has traditionally been designated as Safe Digging Month,” said PUC Chairman Gary Hanson. “South Dakotans are ready to head outdoors to tackle yard projects, get started on planting or break ground on new construction. Calling 811 must be a regular step for each of those plans."

While 811 is free, damaging a buried utility may not be. According to the PUC, diggers can be liable for both fines and repair costs. This is the case whether you’re a homeowner planting a tree or a developer laying groundwork on a new building.

Examples of buried utility infrastructure include telecommunications, natural gas, cable, water and sewer lines.

The 811 portal can also be accessed online at the South Dakota 811 website.
