A long holiday weekend didn’t stop a rockslide from closing one of the Black Hills’ most prominent tourist draws.

Spearfish Canyon Highway 14A was closed for much of Sunday after the slide put several boulders directly in the middle of the road.

Highway 14A is the main Spearfish Canyon scenic route and is the most direct road connecting the city of Spearfish to Deadwood, the seat of Lawrence County.

Department of Transportation officials cleared the road with assistance from the local sheriff’s department, the highway patrol, and A-1 Drilling and Blasting Incorporated, based in Deadwood.

The canyon is now reopened to visitors.
