Sioux Falls residents are cleaning up after a powerful storm Monday night left widespread damage across the region.
City officials say they received nearly 200 damage reports around town through Tuesday morning, with western parts of town seeing the worst of it.
They say if you see a downed power line, don’t approach, just call 911. To report a downed tree impacting traffic, call the police department’s non-emergency number at 605-367-7000 or report it online.
The city is opening up two yard waste drop-off sites where residents can dispose of trees and branches for free. The sites, which are open through Aug. 17, are located at Chambers Street, near the City’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility, and Lyon Boulevard, south of the W. H. Lyon Fairgrounds near West 12th Street.
City public works director Mark Cotter said if you experienced fence or shingle damage, larger repair projects need a permit.
“Generally speaking, if you’re repairing one section of fence, you wouldn’t need a permit," Cotter said. "If you’re repairing a series of posts, you need a permit of that. If you’re repairing or replacing more than 100-square-feet of shingles, you need a permit for that. Also, inspectors are available to conduct same-day inspections if your mast for your power service gets pulled down by a tree branch.”
Additional storm cleanup information, including licensed arborists to remove downed trees, are available on the city’s website.
