15 more deaths, 349 people hospitalized, 26,835 people currently infected

NPR

The state Health Department reports 15 more people have died with COVID-19.

The state’s pandemic death toll now stands at 2,559.

There are 26,385 people currently infected with COVID-19 in the state. That’s an additional ~1,500 since the previous day. And it’s another new record for South Dakota.

There are 349 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19. That’s up 6 over the previous day — and up 37 over the previous week.

Hospitals in the state report that most of their COVID-19 patients are not vaccinated. They are asking the public to help slow the rate of hospitalizations in the state by wearing masks, social distancing, and most importantly — getting vaccinated and boosted.

Meanwhile, the portion of eligible South Dakotans who are fully vaccinated remains at 56 percent.

Information on free vaccines is available at vaccines.gov.

Data update

Note: The data presented is from the previous day — Tuesday updates include data from over the weekend (Saturday 1 pm CT - Monday 1 pm CT)

  • State’s death toll: 2,559 (+15 from the previous report)
    • Note: 'Death toll' indicates the number of deaths among people with COVID, but COVID may not have been the sole cause of death.
    • Deaths verifiably caused by COVID: 2,234 (updated weekly)
  • Active cases: 26,385
  • Eligible South Dakotans fully vaccinated: 56.35%
  • Currently hospitalized: 349 (+6)
    • Note: Currently Hospitalized numbers include COVID-19 cases and people that are in the hospital under transmission-based precautions. The number may include out-of-state cases and people.

Advice from the CDC is to get vaccinated, and mask-up indoors if you live in a place with high or substantial coronavirus transmission. That’s everywhere in South Dakota.
