Avera Research Institute is partnering with over 30 other research teams across the country for a project called the RECOVER network. The project will study long-term effects of COVID-19.
The studies include clinics that treat patients with ongoing COVID-19 symptoms and National Institutes of Health COVID-19 studies. Avera will enroll children and young adults under 25 in a four-year study program to monitor health impacts.
Doctor Amy Elliott is the chief clinical research officer for Avera. She says the study needs people who have had COVID and those who have not.
“Kids and young adults, there’s a lot of questions about what does long-term COVID look like," Elliott said. "What does it mean, how does it happen and who’s the most at-risk? Those are some of the main questions that the NIH RECOVER network is designed to answer.”
Elliott said Avera can conduct some of the studies online, allowing more participants across the state. She said Avera is the only participant in South Dakota.
Some symptoms of long COVID are headaches, fatigue, shortness of breath, anxiety, depression, fever, chronic cough and sleep problems.
