Minnesota 'anti-competitive' ban targets Sanford/Fairview merger

Lawmakers in Minnesota have passed a bill targeting “anti-competitive healthcare mergers.”

This comes as Sanford Health is again attempting a merger with Fairview Health, a smaller Minneapolis-based health service.

The bill, which was passed Sunday, still needs Gov. Tim Walz' signature. It gives the Minnesota Attorney General more authority over health care transaction and would ban out-of-state entities from owning University of Minnesota health care facilities.

In a statement to SDPB, Sanford representatives say they remain confident in the benefits of the merger and are hopeful an agreement between Sanford and the Minnesota Attorney General and University of Minnesota.

The Minnesota AG has investigated the merger since it was first announced in late 2022.
