Ground has been broken on a new emergency care unit for the Black Hills. Just off the interstate, Monument Health leadership says it represents the future of the network and the development in the area.
The new location is just off Mall Drive and is on a plot of land expected to be a hotspot for development, especially new neighborhoods.
Monument Health CEO Paulette Davidson said that was key in selecting this as the home for the new campus.
“We have a 10-year master facility plan – this is just one part of that plan," Davidson said. "We have multiple projects through the Black Hills we have planned, and you can reach this location right off the highway. We know there’s more residential properties that are going to be built, more neighborhoods in this area, so we want to be ready for the future to take care of families.”
This location will begin as a free-standing emergency department but was designed with the plan to create an expandable campus including primary care.
“Potentially obstetric services, we’ll be prepared to use this space really for ambulatory care, maybe in-patient care in the future," Davidson said. "We’ve got a lot of ideas.”
Monument Health physician Dr. Brook Eide said it already represents a meaningful update to hospital services before those expansions take place.
“We’re going to use the same physicians to deliver care here and at our main hospital, and that’ll make the access to care better and create transitions back to that if you do need some of the expanded facilities we offer there," Eide said. "It’s hard to know how many patients will be here, but we’ll be able to see 30-40 patients a day.”
Completion is scheduled for summer 2026.
