South Dakota has reported the first influenza death of the 2020 – 2021 flu season. The death was reported in Potter County.
Dr. Joshua Clayton is the state epidemiologist. He notes that flu activity in South Dakota communities is classified as sporadic. The state is reporting 4 lab-confirmed cases of the flu and 2 flu-related hospitalizations.
To protect against flu complications, Clayton recommends annual flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older.
In addition to vaccination, to prevent the spread of the flu you should wash your hands often, cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough, avoid touching your face, and stay home if you’re sick.
