The Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead has a new building named for U.S. Senator Mike Rounds.
The M. Michael Rounds Operations Center is a 26,000 square-foot building.
It’s a hub for operations and engineering activities. The center includes a maintenance shop, warehouse, and office spaces. The state government built the center for nearly $7 million dollars.
Rounds helped lead the effort to create the underground lab when he was governor in the early 2000s. The lab is in the former Homestake Gold Mine.
