Daschle Reflects At McGovern Funeral

Family, colleagues and friends remember Senator George McGovern Friday; his funeral was held at 1 p.m. in Sioux Falls. The final service for the late Senator included more accolades for his commitment to people around the world.

Mourners stood silently as flags were posted and the casket of Senator George McGovern entered the auditorium. During the two-hour funeral, Senator Tom Daschle delivered a lengthy eulogy. Daschle says McGovern’s decency is unparalleled.

"He said he had desire to work in public service and to be part of both the world of ideas and the field of action," Daschle says. "The hallmark of his career was his drive to bridge the gap between those worlds, to turn ideas into action and aspirations into reality."

Daschle triumphed McGovern’s battle against hunger and conflict.

The former Senate Majority Leader says he can’t begin to recount all the lessons he learned from McGovern, especially through his example rather than through words.

McGovern died Sunday from age-related ailments. He was 90 years old.
