Tax breaks for disabled vets

Time is running out for disabled veterans to file applications to receive a break on their property taxes – and the yearly savings can be substantial.

The South Dakota State Revenue Department is reminding disabled veterans that they have until November 1 to apply for a partial exemption on property taxes.

Department spokesperson Michael Houdyshell says military veterans who are one-hundred percent disabled due to service-related injuries are eligible.

“If they do qualify for the program, they receive a property tax exemption on the first hundred-thousand dollars of valuation on their property, for purposes of property tax” explains Houdyshell, “And that includes the dwelling, the garage and the lot upon which the property sits, or one acre…whichever is less.”

Widows of eligible veterans may also apply for the property tax exemption.

For more information, veterans or their widows should contact their county Director of Equalization or their local Veterans Service Officer.
