The state House of Representatives has approved a grant program for teachers who use technology in the classroom in innovative ways. The bill’s sponsor, Representative David Lust, says teachers need to be armed with the ability to seek out new ways of teaching with technology for the benefit of students.
Representative Charles Hoffman notes that this grant program could complement another proposal working its way through the legislature, one that allows for shared services between rural schools. Hoffman says classroom technology could help to make that happen.
“I just have to tell you, Mr. Speaker, that I think this is one of the greatest advances that we can give to some of our rural schools. Putting some money out there, a carrot on a string, to keep those schools alive, to keep the economy in those rural areas growing,” Hoffman says. “I think this goes a long way toward solving a funding problem for putting that technology into place.”
The technology grant is designed for teachers, not administrators, to apply. The bill now goes to the Senate side for consideration.
