South Dakota has a new State Librarian. Daria Bossman served as the assistant librarian for development for the past five years. Prior to that she was the library director at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa.
Bossman says libraries are not just about books anymore, instead they are about information. She says librarians can help sort through the overabundance of material in today’s digital age.
“Nowadays a librarian should be able to efficiently and effectively get you to the right source, a credible source, good information, succinct information in a quick manner. And that really is the skill of the 21st century librarian is to know where the good information is,” says Bossman.
Bossman says as State Librarian she spends her days training others in the field and assisting South Dakota’s one-hundred-twelve public libraries and over four-hundred school libraries. She says the State Library houses many federal and state documents that are in the process of being digitized. Bossman adds that she hopes to equip South Dakotan’s with research skills to help them to be life-long learners.
