A strong slow-moving thunderstorm developed over Rapid City producing a significant amount of rainfall. Officials with the National Weather Service say the Wednesday evening storm hit areas on Highway 16 just south of town with 6 ½ inches – in just two hours.
While areas north of Rapid City reported having received only one inch of rain, Hydrologist Melissa Smith with the National Weather Service says more wet weather is forecasted for the Black Hills.
“A large area of low pressure centered right over Western South Dakota and as that system slowly makes its way to the East, the moisture is going to wrap around that system and we’re going to see more rain all the way through Friday night and into Saturday morning before it tapers off and the sun comes back out around the area,” says Smith.
Smith says the heavy rains caused flooding in some areas of Meade and Butte counties. She says creeks and streams are also running high from all the run-off and advises the public to avoid any areas with rushing water.
