Fire danger is moderate in the Black Hills right now, that’s according to Scott Jacobson, Public Affairs Officer for the Black Hills National Forest. Jacobson says although moisture levels look good right now, fire officials are remaining vigilant.
“There’s still snowpack up in the upper elevations and a lot of the ground moisture is pretty high yet too so that helps but a lot of the grasses are tall and dry too as they come out of the snow so you know the danger’s still there with fire but the overall fire danger is at a moderate level right now,” says Jacobson.
Jacobson says remote automated weather stations placed throughout the Black Hills determine moisture, humidity, and wind speed. He says that information is relayed to the Great Plains Dispatch Center which updates the fire weather danger in the Black Hills.
