This summer 19-year-old Aberdeen pilot Matt Guthmiller became the youngest person to fly solo around the world. On May 31, Guthmiller took off from Gillespie Field near San Diego in a prop-powered, single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza A36.
After nearly 30,000 miles and 23 stops in 15 countries including Greece, Egypt, Malaysia and Australia, the second-year Massachusetts Institute of Technology student touched down at Gillespie Field on July 14. He was greeted by his mother and a cheering crowd of about 40 people. He says his journey is about inspiring people to do similarly ambitious things.
Matt Guthmiller joined Dakota Midday and discussed his record-setting flight.
