Thanksgiving Weather: Cold East, Warm Black Hills

A meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Aberdeen says eastern South Dakota is in for a cold Thanksgiving. Kelly Serr says the southeast part of the state will see highs in the teens and 20s, while northeast South Dakota will see highs in the teens and single digits, with lows below zero.

“For tonight into tomorrow morning it’s going to be very cold,” Serr says. “We have high pressure that sits right over the top of us so winds will go light and with this new snow cover temperatures will drop quickly. Probably anywhere from five below to some areas are going to be pushing 15 below.”

Serr says things should warm up on Friday. She expects temperatures from the low 30s across northeast South Dakota to the mid 50s in the Black Hills.

Light snow showers are falling across western South Dakota today. Alex Calderon is a Meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Rapid City. He says there isn’t much wind, so visibility should still be good in most areas, although some places around the Black Hills could see heavier snow off and on today. He says warm air will move into the western part of the state tonight.

“That will bring some dryer weather to the area for Thanksgiving, and also much warmer weather,” Calderon says. “While northwest into central South Dakota will probably stay in the 30s for highs, it looks like the Black Hills area into southwest South Dakota will reach the upper 40s to even mid 50s.”

Calderon says all of western South Dakota should see those warm temps on Friday.
