House lawmakers have rejected a measure allowing college students to carry concealed handguns on college campuses.
House bill 1206 was brought by Representative Jim Stalzer on behalf of the University of South Dakota College Republicans. The measure would allow students who are 21 years or older to carry concealed handguns on campus if they had a concealed carry permit. Stalzer says these students are adults and should have the right to defend themselves.
"I remind you of Virginia Tech where, what is it, 33 people were killed and no one was able to stop it," says Stalzer.
Representative Paula Hawks says lawmakers should not pass legislation that is supported by just one student group. She says a multitude of students and student organizations opposed the measure during a committee hearing.
"I’m asking you to please pay attention to your constituents, pay attention to the overwhelming lack of support for this bill and their pleas to do what they are asking you to do. They are your constituents, they are of voting age and they do have voices. Please listen to them," says Hawks.
House Bill 1206 failed to pass the House. The final vote was 20 yays and 48 nays.
