The State Department of Education is working to help with students nutrition and retention this summer. The agency is joining with the U-S-D-A in the Summer Food Service Program and Seamless Summer Option. Sandra Kangas (KANG-gis) is with the Department of Education. She says the program looks to have more students ready to learn when school re-opens this fall.
Kangas says, “Now during the school year, when students are learning, they need nutrition to help with their paying attention and their learning. But during the summer, they also need nutrition to help with their retention. And so, providing meals in needy areas helps with that.”
Kangas says participating sites may include schools, non-profits, libraries and other places. Information on finding local sites can be found by texting the word “food” to 877-877.
