The National Football League’s Atlanta Falcons are putting the world’s largest video display in their new stadium--and a South Dakota-based company is behind the project. The NFL team hired Daktronics of Brookings to design and construct the massive scoreboard.
Daktronics Manager of Professional Sports Projects, Brent Stevens, says the display will completely circle the top of the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and stand 60 feet high. For reference, that is about the height of the faces on Mount Rushmore.
”First and foremost, it is the largest video display—what we would call a typical video display, in the world; not only in the NFL or a sports stadium. If you look at the largest that’s out there right now, this display is more than three times larger than the largest video display in sports," Stevens says.
Stevens says the scoreboard will show high definition images, and give the Falcons complete flexibility on game day.
“So the idea behind it is, they’re gonna divide the board up when game action is going on, and they’re gonna run six different locations of where the live feed will be—so the game action. And the rest of the display will be broken up into stats and game-in-progress information. You know, all the stuff the fans look for while they’re in the stadium. But they’re also able to do moments of exclusivity and some really neat fan engagement things where they can take the whole board and control it as one.”
Stevens says once the pieces are done and shipped to Atlanta, it will take about 90 days to install. The Falcons plan to open the new stadium next season.
