Administrators and officials with Rapid City Area Schools are receiving training to become certified ALICE instructors.
Katy Urban is the community relations manager with Rapid City Area Schools. She says the ALICE program will make the district safer.
"ALICE stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. It's the first program in the country to use option-based, proactive survival strategies to prepare for an 'active killer' situation. That term 'active killer' sounds harsh, but that's what it is. That's what ALICE is preparing for. It's for the imminent danger, that threat that's right in your face right now and how you respond to it," Urban says.
Participants in the ALICE training completed classroom and teaching work yesterday and will complete drills in order to be prepared to deal with an active killer situation.
Urban says those who complete the training will teach all other Rapid City Area Schools employees in the ALICE method.
These employees will complete online training later this month and will participate in face-to-face training during the school year.
