Winter Storm Closes Interstates

National Weather Service

The winter storm that is moving through South Dakota is forcing road closures and no travel advisories across the state.

Officials with the South Dakota Department of Transportation have closed Interstate 90 from Rapid City to Mitchell in both directions.

State officials have also closed Interstate 29 from the North Dakota border to Brookings in both directions.

The Sioux Falls Regional Airport will close late this evening and will remain closed until 7 p.m. Saturday.

The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for central, north central, east central, and southeast South Dakota through Saturday. Aberdeen and far northern South Dakota is under a winter weather advisory. The Rapid City area is under a winter weather advisory through this evening.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service project some communities in south central South Dakota may receive up to 2 feet of snow from this mid-April storm. They say parts of southeast and east central South Dakota could pick up 12 to 18 inches of snow from this weather system.

DOT and South Dakota Department of Public Safety officials encourage the public to stay off the roads as this storm moves through the state.  Road conditions are posted at safetravelusa.com
