The Oscar Howe Summer Art Institute honors longtime University of South Dakota professor and Northern Plains artists Oscar Howe. He established the institute in the 1960s in order to guide the next generation of Native American artists.
Contemporary artist Wendy Red Star is at the University of South Dakota this week to teach at the Oscar Howe Summer Art Institute. She works across disciplines to explore the intersections of Native American ideologies and colonial structures, both historically and in contemporary society.
Her work has been exhibited at the Metropolitan Institute of Art, the Minneapolis Institute of Art and across the globe.
