Already-waterlogged southeast South Dakota was hit with more heavy rain Monday night. A large low-pressure system came through the area and brought heavy rains and flooding. Andrew Kalin with the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls says the rainstorm followed a familiar path for this early Summer.
“Kinda from the east of Yankton, east to Vermillion and south into Dixon County had heavy rainfall amounts—anywhere from an inch and a half to a little over two inches is kind of what we’ve seen down there. Elsewhere across southeast South Dakota, amounts were between a half-inch to about an inch, give or take.”
Kalin says it’s going to be a while before flooded rivers go back into their banks—but he says the next few days should help.
“We’ll start to see a drying trend here over the next few days—we still have a slight chance of a few isolated showers and thunderstorms today, but nothing significant in those parts. And then, just hit-or-miss chances of rain chances for the rest of the week, but it doesn’t look like any heavy rain makers—until potentially as we head toward the weekend. Saturday, another system will be coming in, and we could see some thunderstorm chances with that. But it’s still too early to tell how big the rain chances are with those, though.”
Kalin says many roads in the southeast part of the state still have water running over them. Public safety officials say drivers should turn around and find another route if their road is covered in flood water.
