Authorities are investigating a fatal workplace accident in eastern South Dakota.

It happened Tuesday afternoon at a gravel pit about four miles east of Brookings.

According to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, a 19-year-old employee was found dead by co-workers. He had been working near a large piece of machinery. While other employees were at the site, the victim was working alone at the time of the accident.

Emergency responders from several agencies arrived at the scene soon afterwards. Investigators believe the employee was already dead when he was found by his co-workers.

Authorities identified the victim as Izak Wixon of Brookings.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration is investigating.
