A volunteer firefighter died responding to a fire in Huron.
Officials identified the fallen firefighter as Josh Kogel. He was chief of the Cavour Volunteer Fire Department.
That department was one of several that responded to a fire at a Huron business Monday.
Kogel experienced a medical emergency while working with a truck outside the building. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Huron Fire Chief Ron Hines said officials requested mutual aid from other departments due to the size of the fire. The business, HURD Alignment and Service, is considered a total loss.
The nature of the medical emergency has not been released. Hines noted that the air temperature that day hovered around 100 degrees, but would not speculate as to whether that contributed to Kogel's condition.
The state fire marshal is investigating the incident, which is standard in any active-duty firefighter death.
Hines said volunteers like Kogel are the backbone of fire service.
“He would give you the shirt off has back, to help you with anything. A very, very good guy," Hines said. "Twenty-plus years, probably 27 years in the fire service. He’ll be greatly missed by his friends and family and brothers and sisters in the fire service.”
