Russian President Vladimir Putin said the plane was in Syrian airspace, and also announced that Russia will deploy advanced anti-aircraft missiles to its airbase in Syria.

President Vladimir Putin has responded angrily to the downing of a Russian fighter jet near the Syrian-Turkish border Tuesday. Turkey said its aircraft shot down the Russian fighter after it violated Turkish airspace — a claim Moscow denies.

Turkey says it shot down a Russian fighter plane which had violated its airspace. Russia says one of its planes was shot down over Syria by groundfire, and that it did not violate Turkish airspace.

Explosions on tower pylons in Ukraine knocked out power to much of Crimea. Crimea receives most of its power from Ukraine. The incident highlights the volatile atmosphere between Russia and Ukraine.

Russian finally acknowledged a terrorist plot brought down a Russian jetliner over Egypt last month. In Paris, the Muslim community worries there will be a backlash against them after the attacks.

Russia has been provisionally suspended by international track and field's governing body. The decision could keep Russian athletes out of next year's Olympic Games in Brazil.
