Who is Ella Deloria and how did she come to research and draft this amazing work? Born in 1889 on the Yankton Sioux Tribe Reservation and raised on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe reservation, Ella is a member of one of the more interesting families in South Dakota's history. Her uncompleted book was brought back to life by Raymond J. De Maille and today's guest, Thierry Veyrié. We discussed Ella's remarkable path from South Dakota to Columbia University, her training under the nation's first anthropologists, and her tireless work interviewing Lakota and Dakota people in the early 20th century. The result is a book the describes Dakota traditions and family ways based on her conversations with the Dakota and Lakota people who practiced them. For the book see: The Dakota Way of Life :Nebraska Press (unl.edu)
