The House of Representatives considers House Bill 1311 hopes to clear up some confusion in the courts when it comes to becoming a parent in South Dakota. The bill would essentially end contract-for-birth surrogacy. Here is a summary of the debate on HB 1311.

NPR's desk contest is underway. The contest invites artists across the nation to submit original music for a chance to perform at the desk of NPR music curator Bob Boilen. Winners will tour with NPR across the country. In 2021, Biology Professor Jeff Wesner and English instructor Joe Raiche of the Band Fine Mess submitted their song "Glue." Wesner and Raiche formed their band in June 2020 alongside Vermillion nurse Amy Askew. Wesner says they're hoping to submit another song for the 2022 contest, but they haven't planned anything yet. It took 40 years to build the Washington Monument in the heart of our nation’s capital but work on the 555-foot 5-inch tall obelisk has never really stopped. Commemorative stones have been added to the monument’s interior structure from time to time, including one carved from South Dakota granite that features the state seal. Matthew Reitzel is the manuscript archivist at the South Dakota State Archives and joins me now on the phone from Pierre with more.
Georges Méliès is one of film’s founding fathers and often considered the creator of the cinematic spectacle. His films, which were developed around the turn of the century are finding new life thanks to the work of French musician and magician Jean-François Alcoléa. “Right in the eye” is a concert designed as a soundtrack to a montage of silent films by Méliès. That show is coming to the Matthews Opera House in Spearfish on February 24. We talk with Jean-François Alcoléa and learn how the filmography of Méliès inspired him to pursue a "collaboration."
