South Dakota creates an Office of Indigent Legal Services

On today's show...

The U.S. Supreme Court readies for a new term. Mike Thompson, J.D., an associate professor of criminal justice at the University of Sioux Falls, shares the cases before the Court that he's watching.

South Dakota's indigent defense system is undergoing an overhaul. The state was the last in the nation where counties were financially responsible for providing legal counsel to people who couldn't afford private counsel.

South Dakota Supreme Court Chief Justice Steven Jensen, Dean Neil Fulton of the University of South Dakota Knudson School of Law and chair of the newly created Office of Indigent Defense, and Greg Sattizahn, South Dakota's State Court Administrator, join us.

They discuss the changes and their potential impacts in rural South Dakota.

Plus, we meet Chris Miles, the state's newly appointed chief public defender.
