Poetry in conversation with the landscape

On today's show...

Ada Limón's tenure as U.S. Poet Laureate is coming to a close. We revisit our May 2024 conversation with the poet.

Her poetry anthology "You Are Here" was part of her signature project. She discusses how the work asks readers to pay deep attention to the natural world and why you should pay attention to how a poem makes you feel (1:00 to 24:27).

A tiny, cat-sized deer once roamed the prehistoric Great Plains. When it died, it became part of the rock bed at Badlands National Park.

Around 32 million years later, researchers realized its newly-discovered skull was unique. Not only is it a new species, it's the first of a new genus.

Mattison Shreero is a former park ranger and a geologist and paleontologist. She is one of the main researchers on the paper describing Santuccimeryx.

She shares why this tiny deer has big implications for the scientific record (24:27 to 38:16).
