The Department of Education is releasing draft social studies standards for South Dakota’s K-12 students. Last year, the proposed standards were the subject of controversy following the removal of specific references to the state’s Indigenous people.

The state Department of Education says some standards used to teach students about Native American history and culture could be in violation of an executive order from the governor.

A federal judge has ordered Lyman County, South Dakota, to come up with a plan for the November elections that gives the Lower Brule Tribe a chance to elect its preferred county commissioner candidates.

Recently, Kansas voters overwhelmingly rejected a ballot measure that would have allowed state lawmakers to tighten restrictions on abortion.
