On today's update...

Congress recently announced a bipartisan tax deal including a three-year extension of the Child Tax Credit. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities estimates the proposed plan would benefit 41,000 South Dakota kids in the first year.

A South Dakota legislative committee votes against a bill aiming to adjust how the state observes time. By adjusting time zones every spring and fall, South Dakota would stay in daylight saving time year-round.

The Senate Health and Human Services committee passed a bill repealing protections for medical marijuana dispensaries against law enforcement. Republican Senator Jim Mehlhaff introduced the bill.

A proposal to redefine literacy standards for South Dakota educators has advanced from the House Education committee. Proponents say its a return to traditional phonics education with proven outcomes.

The Senate Commerce and Energy Committee passes a bill limiting property rights for homeowner associations. It would prohibit associations from banning firearms on their property.

South Dakota tourism officials say the industry is breaking visitation and spending records again. According to a report, the state saw 14.7 million visitors in 2023. That's a 2.3 percent increase over 2022.
