Opposition to a proposal to build a state men’s prison in Mitchell is growing. A second major city leader who previously backed the idea is now coming out against the project.

Some past state lawmakers are raising concerns about the change in direction on building a new men’s prison. A governor-appointed task force recently voted to abandon a project site that the state has already spent $50 million on.

As thousands climb to the peak of Crazy Horse for the first Volksmarch of 2025, changes are looming at the world’s largest mountain carving. Something new looms near the peak of the Crazy Horse memorial — an unmissable tower crane, spanning an additional 270 feet close to the summit.

The South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources has confirmed the emerald ash borer has spread to Milbank. As a result, officials have expanded the existing quarantine area to include Grant County.

After a strong start to the season, state parks in South Dakota saw a decline in visitors last month. Despite the setback, South Dakota GFP officials say they are optimistic about the rest of the season.
