On today's update...

An interim legislative committee studying the state’s prison system is noticing ways South Dakota stands out from other states. Notably, that includes a higher rate of drug offenses and a higher percentage of Native individuals behind bars.

State leaders are awarding more than $1.5 million to develop job training at the South Dakota State Penitentiary. Southeast Tech will offer on-site instruction at the penitentiary to give inmates the chance to earn a diesel heavy equipment certificate.

Some conversations and arguments surrounding a proposed prison site in Mitchell were brought forward in an organized community debate.

State health officials say they’ve detected the West Nile virus in South Dakota for the first time this season in Minnehaha County. There has yet to be a human case confirmed this year.

Attorney General Marty Jackley said the state is filing dozens of charges in connection to two separate prison investigations — one involving a deadly drug ring, the other a series of assaults at the state penitentiary.

Pete Lien and Sons will donate 23 acres of land to the City of Rapid City in part to build an indoor sports complex for youth activities.
