In regard to whether the state needs a new penitentiary, the head of South Dakota’s prison system says, “we don’t have an option.” A governor-appointed task force unanimously decided the 144-year-old building needed to go. However, they recommended a $650 million prison, well below any of the bids offered.
Pay is going up for non-unionized Rapid City municipal employees. The decision was made by the Rapid City Common Council at this weeks’ meeting. Ward 3 Councilor Kevin Maher said it’s a three percent cost of living adjustment. This raise was previously negotiated, though questions in the political process held the change up from its expected July 1 deadline. That drew critique from advocates for city employees.
A legislative interim committee began work this week in Pierre to evaluate critical challenges facing the state's emergency medical services. The group is looking into limited ambulance availability in rural areas, staffing shortages, funding sustainability, streamlining resources and operations and other issues.
