Taxes pay for a lot in society, but South Dakota’s property tax has become something of a bear for the Legislature to slay. During the offseason, lawmakers are trying to determine how to implement promised cuts while maintaining government operations.

The Sioux Falls City Council agreed to change 160 acres of land between Sioux Falls and Brandon from residential to a light industrial development area. The land in question was owned by Xcel Energy and sold to Gemini Capital, a Los Angeles-based company.

Attorney General Marty Jackley is joining a group of colleagues urging Instagram to make immediate changes to its new location-sharing feature. Jackley said the feature allows the precise location of users to be displayed on the map.

The South Dakota Beef Industry Council is naming Jon Dilworth as its new executive director. He will oversee the council’s statewide beef promotion, education, and research programs funded through the beef checkoff.

The City of Spearfish is moving forward with an effort to develop a safety action plan to reduce crashes on city streets.
