The state Department of Social Services is facing pressure to release millions of dollars in opioid settlement funds. South Dakota lawmakers recently discussed the possibility of passing legislation that would force the department’s hand.

Schools facing sanctions by state government have received their fates from the legislative Appropriations Committee. After appeal, Frederick Area and the Miller School Districts will not face full financial penalties.

Attorney General Marty Jackley said more charges are on the way in connection to drug overdose death investigations in state prisons.
