Property taxes are the hottest topic of 2026 in the state Capitol. Now, it’s crunch time for bills trying to survive committees.

A Senate committee tables – effectively killing - a bill that would’ve created land banks in South Dakota. The tool is used to promote housing development at the local level by recovering “blighted” areas.

West River should be on notice for a winter weather system moving through the area today.

Hopes are still alive to expand free and reduced school lunch for South Dakota students. But lawmakers on the state Appropriations Committee want more information before voting.
