South Dakota Republican U.S. Senator Mike Rounds says he’s keeping an open mind on whether to certify the formal count of the Electoral College.
Rounds says he looks forward to seeing evidence to support objections being proposed.
In a press statement, Rounds did not offer any details about what objections he’s referring to. He says the constitution, not political expediency, will guide his decision making.
Senator Rounds also says he supports an independent investigation into the 2020 election.
Republican President Donald Trump lost the election to Democrat Joe Biden. The Trump campaign has repeatedly tried and failed to overturn the outcome in key states.
Rounds’ counterpart, Republican Senate Majority Whip John Thune has said any attempt to overturn the election results will go down like a “shot dog.”
Representative Dusty Johnson’s office declines to say how he will vote, saying they’ll release a statement later.
