House lawmakers are overwhelmingly rejecting Governor Kristi Noem’s partial veto of a bill that prevents transgender girls from playing girls’ sports.
Some voted against the changes because they feel the governor overstepped in her use of style and form veto of the legislation.
Others voted against the bill because they did not like the bill.
According to the state constitution, the rejection ultimately goes down as a veto. If House lawmakers want to override her decision it requires a two-thirds majority vote.
The governor has said she will call a special session to take up the issue if lawmakers reject her changes. She’s left the Capitol to oversee fire response efforts in Rapid City.
