The group backing a ballot measure question similar to Initiated Measure 22 says they have over half of the signatures needed to make the ballot in next year’s election.
Initiated Measure 22 was a voter approved ethics reform package that was held up in state courts and ultimately repealed by the state legislature.
Doug Kronaizl is the spokesperson for Represent South Dakota, which is floating the constitutional amendment. He says they have just over ten thousand more signatures to gather…
“Obviously we want to shoot for higher than the requirement. The requirement is 27,000. We were very excited to find our last Saturday that, with all the numbers coming in, we were around 16,400 or so signatures that we have. We’re feeling good,” Kronaizl says. “We’re feeling like there’s some positive momentum out there. There’s a lot of interest in getting these petitions into communities and there’s a lot of interest in people working together to put this positive change on the ballot.”
Much like IM 22, the Anti-Corruption Amendment restricts lobbyist gifts to politicians, restricts campaign money and establishes an ethics commission.
If the amendment makes it on the ballot, voter will decide whether or not to put the language into the state’s constitution.
