Members of South Dakota's congressional delegation have helped pass a law that addresses shipping problems.
The bill seeks to level the playing field for American exporters at sea.
Senator John Thune and Representative Dusty Johnson are co-sponsors of the bill. The House passed the legislation and the president signed it recently after the Senate passed it in March.
Thune says the passage of the bill proves Congress can still do big things in a bipartisan way.
“The Ocean Shipping Reform Act will help ease supply chain pressures by addressing unfair ocean carrier practices, speeding up the resolution of detention and demurrage disputes, and improving the movement of goods at our nation’s ports.”
The bill will assist the Federal Maritime Commission in resolving disputes with carriers and shippers. The commission is the federal agency responsible for regulating the U.S. international ocean transportation system.
