A legislative panel is greenlighting rules for a program to educate and license more appraisers.
The legislative panel had rejected changes to the program twice before over industry concerns of diluting the Experience Training Program.
The Department of Labor and professional appraiser groups have been at odds over proposed changes, like experience hours and work sample requirements.
Now, Labor Secretary Marcia Hultman says program participants will go through the same steps as those who take the traditional path.
“Once that is established and as they work through that education, they’re still going to have to pass the same assessments, turn in the appraisals to be reviewed in the same manner as anyone doing the traditional path with the same requirements,” Hultman said to the Interim Rules Review Committee on Tuesday.
The state’s appraiser certification program received a $120,000 federal grant to start the Experience Training Program. It’s a first in the nation program meant to train more appraisers in South Dakota.
It was first proposed by former program director Sherry Bren, who settled with the state in 2021 over an age discrimination complaint.
The program will be taught through SDSU and is scheduled to start next year.
