Both South Dakota U.S. Senators are pushing back against a call from former President Donald Trump to suspend parts of the U.S. Constitution to reinstate him as President.
Trump made the comments over the weekend on Truth Social, his social media platform. He repeated claims the 2020 election was fraudulent. There is no evidence of widespread fraud in that election.
Sen. Mike Rounds issued a statement refuting Trump’s claims. Rounds said elected officials have a duty to protect the Constitution.
“Anyone who desires to lead our country must commit to protecting the Constitution," Rounds said. "They should not threaten to terminate it."
Meantime, Politico reports Sen. John Thune also pushed back against Trump’s comments, saying “of course I disagree with that.” Thune added Trump’s comments could serve as fodder for potential challengers in the 2024 Republican Presidential Primary.
