In their own words: Changing a nomination process

Senator David Johnson is one of the prime sponsors of SB 40.

There's a set process for earning certain statewide offices in South Dakota. To become Secretary of State or Attorney General, you first must be nominated as a candidate at your party's state convention.

Senate Bill 40 would change that step. Instead of being chosen by delegates at conventions, candidates would be chosen by the primary ballot.
